What is LASIK eye surgery

LASIK is an acronym for Laser in situ Keratomileusis. A type of refractive surgery, LASIK is an outpatient surgical procedure that is used to treat myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. A laser is used to reshape the cornea and improve the way the eye focuses light rays onto the retina. Successful results help people reduce dependence on prescription glasses and contacts.

The safety and success of LASIK makes it the number one refractive surgical procedure performed in the United States. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), seven out of 10 LASIK patients achieve 20/20 vision; although reading glasses may still be required for patients around 45 years of age or more. In addition, the procedure is usually pain-free and can be completed in as little as 15 minutes. Best of all, improved vision can typically be seen in just 24 hours.

Lasik Procedure

LASIK is the most advanced form of laser vision correction, and even though it requires highly sophisticated instruments, the procedure itself consists of just three simple steps. Our Salt Lake City lasik surgeons, Dr. Brockbank and Dr. Dodds, use a laser to create a thin flap of tissue on the surface of the eye. Next, a laser light gently reshapes the underlying tissue. Finally, the thin flap of tissue is repositioned, covering the area that was reshaped.

LASIK eye surgery doesn't require bandages or stitches - topical anesthetic drops are all that is required during the procedure. After the procedure is completed, the cornea is allowed to heal naturally.

The new shape of the cornea is what improves a patient's vision. To correct nearsightedness, the goal is to flatten the cornea. For those with farsightedness, the doctor creates a steeper cornea. In addition, the quality of the flap is crucial - it minimizes complications and helps to achieve excellent results. Many Utah lasik surgeons agree that creating an exceptional, high-quality flap is 80% of a procedure's success.

At our Lasik eye institute we use state-of-the-art lasers that sculpt the eye's surface one microscopic layer at a time. With the expert guidance of our doctors, the laser precisely reshapes the cornea with little or no effect on the surrounding tissue. In fact, the average LASIK procedure removes less than the thickness of a human hair.

IS LASIK RIGHT FOR ME?

LASIK is a great match for those with a moderate degree of refractive error (nearsightedness, etc.). Utah's lasik eye doctors at Olympus Eye Associates will complete a thorough eye exam and consultation to help you determine if you are a good candidate for LASIK. Prior to the procedure, we will conduct additional tests, such as measuring the thickness of your cornea, to make sure you receive the maximum benefit from the surgery.

Good Candidates:

  • Feel handicapped by dependence on corrective lenses.
  • Have not been very successful with contact lenses.
  • Are active and crave more freedom to participate in sports and other activities
  • Worry about being incapacitated if corrective lenses were misplaced and they were unable to function in a crisis situation.
  • Believe good natural vision without the hassle of corrective lenses is more important than perfect vision with corrective lenses.
  • Would be happy if their natural vision was significantly improved, even if corrective lenses were needed part or full time.
  • Are generally fairly easygoing and usually adjust well to change.
  • Feel they would have better career opportunities with reduced dependence on corrective lenses.
